This fieldwork is planned for October 10th – 15th 2022 (Monday through Saturday), with the NCAS Annual Fall meeting being held at Town Creek on Saturday, October 15th, coinciding with International Archeology Day and the final day of excavations. Please join us for our business meeting, speakers, guided site tours, and lunch!

The specific research goal of the excavations will be to investigate an area north of the palisaded portion of Town Creek where a 2014 magnetometer survey indicated the potential for numerous subsurface features. Due to the lack of systematic archaeological excavations in this part of the site, little is known about how this area was used and how it relates to the core of the site to the south. The planned investigations have the potential to help us learn what activities were taking place outside the palisade, and how they relate to the overall trajectory of American Indian history at Town Creek. In this first phase of field work, the primary goal will be to expose, document, and map any intact features.

We invite current NCAS members to participate in the excavations. Activities for which help is needed include digging, sifting soil to recover artifacts, troweling, and mapping with a laser transit. Archaeologists will be available to train participants in field methods, so no previous experience is required. Come for the whole week or just an afternoon! If you would like to volunteer, please contact Douglas Hill.

Excavations will begin daily at 8:30 am and continue until 4:00pm. In case of inclement weather bring rain gear. Canopies will be on site. Wear comfortable outdoor clothing that can get dirty and bring gloves and camping chairs if needed. Food and lodging will NOT be provided, but free on-site tent camping is available. The camping area has a large fire pit, ample firewood, and a spigot, but no power.

This event is hosted by the North Carolina Archaeological Society

Town Creek Indian Mound State Historic Site
509 Town Creek Mound Rd
Mt. Randolph Daniel, Jr., Professor and Chair of Department of Anthropology, East Carolina University

The archaeological record represents the material remains of the history of the human species. It is irreplaceable. Acknowledging that fact, professional archaeologists have adopted “stewardship” as the core principle of archaeological ethics. Following that core principle, professional archaeologists are both caretakers of and advocates for the archaeological record. In this presentation, Dr. Daniel will define archaeological stewardship, discuss why it is important, and encourage its continued development in North Carolina. Regarding this last point, good stewardship involves the cooperation of professional archaeologists and the general public — particularly including descendant communities and the artifact-collecting community alike.

About our Presenter

Randy Daniel is Professor and Chair of the anthropology department at East Carolina University where he has worked since 1996. He received his PhD in 1994 from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His research interests include the archaeology of prehistoric hunter-gatherers in the Southeastern United States, particularly hunter-gatherer adaptations at the end of the last Ice Age. His methodological specializations include stone tool analysis, spatial analysis, and hunter-gatherer settlement systems. Publications related to that research have appeared in three books, several book chapters, and in journals including American Antiquity, Current Research in the Pleistocene, Southeastern Archaeology, and North Carolina Archaeology. He is also the recipient of the 1999 C.B. Moore Award for Excellence in Archaeology by a Young Scholar in Southeastern Studies by the Lower Mississippi Survey & Peabody Museum, Harvard.

More Information

NC Museum of Natural Sciences

Archaeology Month

Lecture

Archaeology Month

Public Archaeology

Tue, 13 Sep 2022 17:36:26 +0000 cpage2 306 at https://archaeology.ncdcr.gov Submerged NC: Maritime Archaeology - Discovering and Exploring Shipwrecks https://archaeology.ncdcr.gov/events/2021-10-07/submerged-nc-shipwreck-archaeology Submerged NC: Maritime Archaeology - Discovering and Exploring Shipwrecks cpage2 Thu, 07/29/2021 - 09:32

Thu, Oct 7 2021, 4 - 5pm

This webinar was recorded.

Watch it here!

Presenter: Shannon Ricles, Education and Outreach Coordinator, NOAA's Monitor National Marine Sanctuary

America’s greatest museum of our past as a seafaring nation lies on the bottom of our nation’s ocean, seas, lakes, and rivers. That heritage is a legacy of thousands of years of settlement, exploration, immigration, harvesting the bounty of the sea, and creating coastal communities and maritime traditions. Shipwrecks offer an exciting window into the study and preservation of our past. They are a random sampling of voyages and a record of past trade and communication. It’s almost as if they are frozen in time, giving a fresh perspective on history and acting as valuable classrooms. Archaeology is the study of the ancient and recent past, and maritime archaeology offers a rare glimpse into these submerged historical resources and the landscape that surrounds them.

Join Shannon Ricles, Education and Outreach Coordinator for Monitor National Marine Sanctuary to dive into maritime archaeology. Explore its early beginnings, and learn about maritime archaeology as a career. Discover how technology has changed the tools used to explore shipwrecks, while you dive into the waters off North Carolina. Learn how NOAA and partners work to conserve and protect submerged historical resources and grasp the significance of a World War II battlefield located just off the North Carolina coast. Hear how maritime archaeologists and technology discovered three shipwrecks that give us greater insight into World War II’s Battle of the Atlantic.

Preview a free STEM curriculum guide designed to help students understand maritime archaeology. Activities in the guide explore ships through time, the people of maritime archeology, the tools they use, and shipwreck ethics and conservation. Often seen as "V" or "W"-shaped stone alignments, these highly efficient fishing structures were used extensively throughout the pre-colonial and historic periods, some potentially dating back millennia and represent an important part of our cultural landscape.

For a variety of reasons, stone fish weirs have received only intermittent attention from the archaeological community and are rarely the focus of systematic surveys. New improvements in the quality and accessibility of satellite-based imagery, like Google Earth, have made the identification and recording of fish weir sites possible on a regional scale.

Join David Cranford to learn about the many different types of fish weirs that can be found worldwide and how their shapes help determine where they are located. Learn about archaeological approaches to studying fish weir sites and hear about some of the initial findings and insights of the North Carolina Fish Weir Archaeological Project that has documented more than 800 potential fish weirs.

Related Content

All recorded Submerged NC lectures

More Information

NOAA's Monitor National Marine Sanctuary

Digital

Lecture

Public Archaeology

Submerged NC

Tue, 27 Jul 2021 16:51:46 +0000 cpage2 269 at https://archaeology.ncdcr.gov The Science of Archaeology https://archaeology.ncdcr.gov/news/events/science-archaeology The Science of Archaeology
elise.carroll@dncr.nc.gov
cpage2 Mon, 03/15/2021 - 15:16
Elise Carroll

Mon, Apr 12 - Sat, Apr 17 2021, All day

Did you know archaeology is considered a science? The specific research goal of this project is to investigate an area north of the palisaded portion of the site where, due to the lack of archaeological investigations in this part of the site, little is known about how this area was used and how it relates to the core of the site to the south. In this first phase of fieldwork, the primary goal will be to expose, document, and map any intact archaeological features.

We invite current NCAS members to participate (join or renew). Activities for which help is needed include digging, sifting soil to recover artifacts, troweling, and mapping with a laser transit. Archaeologists will be available to train participants in field methods so no previous experience is required! To register, please fill out the survey below.

Excavations will begin daily at 8:30 am and continue until 4:00 pm. In case of inclement weather, please bring rain gear. Canopies will be on site. Please wear comfortable outdoor clothing that can get dirty and bring gloves and camping chairs if needed. Food and lodging will NOT be provided, but free on-site tent camping is available. The camping area has a large fire pit, ample firewood, and a spigot, but no power.
