Upcoming Events hosted by the NC Office of State Archaeology Canceled

Tuesday, March 17, 2020

In accordance with Governor Roy Cooper’s Executive Order 117, and to help limit the spread of COVID-19, the Office of State Archaology will suspend public operations beginning Mar. 17. All events and programs are cancelled during this time and our facilities will not be open to the public, which includes consultants wishing to access our site files for conducting background research.

Until we reopen to the public, consultants wishing to conduct research may contact us at archaeology@ncdcr.gov to obtain information on archaeological sites within a project area. Someone from our office will be in touch as soon as possible to discuss your request.

In light of Governor Cooper’s state of emergency declaration and guidance regarding canceling or postponing large gatherings in an effort to limit the spread of COVID-19, some upcoming special events hosted by the NC Office of State Archaeology have been canceled. These events include:

  • “Hidden Beneath the Waves: Exploring the Underwater Cultural Heritage of North Carolina” lecture at the Western Regional Archives, Asheville, NC, March 24-25, 2020
  • Student Research Symposium at the NC Museum of History, Raleigh, NC, March 27, 2020
  • Historic African American Cemetery Workshop, Asheville, NC, March 28, 2020
  • NCAS Spring Dig at Town Creek Indian Mound, Mt. Gilead, NC, April 15-19, 2020

While we are disappointed not to be able to offer these experiences, the health and safety of our visitors, volunteers, and staff is always our first priority. If these events can be rescheduled, we will announce new dates in the future.

At this time, our facility remains open for individual visits. However, if visitors are currently sick or belong to a group at high risk per the NC Department of Health and Human Services, they are encouraged to postpone their visit. During this time our facility is taking these extra precautionary measures:

  • More frequent cleaning of high-traffic areas.
  • Hand sanitizer provided for visitor use.
  • Frequent handwashing by staff.
  • Encouraging staff to telework to the greatest extent possible.

For up to date information on other upcoming events, please visit our website and social media channels. More information on health precautions can be found at the NCDHHS website at ncdhhs.gov/coronavirus.
